Welcome! It’s nice to meet you.
My name is Joanna Marek. I have been an elementary school librarian at Spring Avenue for 12 years. My degrees include a Masters in Library and Information Science and Masters in Educational Administration both from Dominican University in River Forest, IL. I believe that the future of our public library systems are predicted by the strength of our school library programs. In addition to being a school librarian, I also spend my time working out, cultivating houseplants, and traveling to visit friends.
While there are many stressful and challenging aspects of being a school librarian, I am aware that we get one chance to make an impact on students in their early learning years. Each day I ask myself what is possible? How can I influence these young learners to be the best they can be? When students enter the library I greet them by saying “This is your library, let’s find something wonderful.”
At the end of last school year, I received a handwritten note from a 6th grader saying “you are the best librarian anyone could wish for.” I was humbled by this sentiment, and I share it as a way to advocate for school libraries. Every student should have the chance to write a letter like this to a school librarian. Within our schools across the country, there are young learners, young thinkers, and young leaders. These students are our future library patrons, our community’s taxpayers, and our country’s decision makers. We must continue to advocate for certified school librarians in each school building. Research shows and our values guide us to believe that students who have access to school libraries and certified librarians do better in school.
I look forward to hearing from you and working with you on advocating for school libraries. I also welcome book suggestions, favorite restaurants, and your favorite place to grab a good cup of coffee.
